I Neurosis sono una della band più influenti della scena estrema americana (e, di riflusso, mondiale). Refrattari alle mode, hanno perseguito negli anni una visione originale senza mai accettare compromessi, fino ad elaborare un suono densissimo, primordiale e denso di spiritualità, che ingloba e metabolizza industrial, metal, hardcore, death, progressive, addirittura folk. I Neurosis sono la colonna sonora delle viscere della terra.
Il gruppo inizia la sua missione sul finire del 1985 a Oakland, in California. I membri sono Steve Von Till (chitarra, voce, percussione), Dave Edwardson (basso, voce), Scott Kelly (basso, voce), Jason Roeder (batteria), Noah Landis (tastiere, sample) e Pete Inc. (apparati visivi duranti i concerti).

Il debutto Pain Of Mind arriva nel 1987, le sonorità sono ancora thrash-hardcore: la sperimentazione è appena all'inizio, attraversa The Word As Law (1990) e finalmente approda a esiti entusiasmanti con Souls At Zero (1992). Il successivo Enemy Of The Sun (1994), scosso da rimbombi precussivi, enfatizza la componente tribale e ingrossa ulteriormente il suono dei Neurosis. Alla musica della band si accompagna dal vivo la proiezione di immagini, creando una fusione di stimoli psichedelici che coinvolgono, travolgono e prosciugano il pubblico.
Through Silver In Blood (1996) propone canzoni di dimensioni imponenti, costruite su climax lenti ed esasperanti che guidano a uno stato di trance ipnotica. I Neurosis non sono di facile approccio: esigono uno sforzo mentale sfiancante, e quindi naturalmente selettivo. Sono ormai un'entità riverita e imitata, e nonostante restino totalmente estranei a qualunque forma di successo commerciale, vengono invitati a partecipare al primo Ozzfest. Nel 1999 esce Times Of Grace, che si integra e si completa con il contemporaneo "Grace" dei Tribes Of Neurot. Rietrato dal tour, il gruppo allestisce una casa discografica tutta sua, la Neurot Recordings, e incide l'EP Sovereign (2000).
Un anno dopo ecco il capolavoro A Sun That Never Sets, che segna una maturazione sempre più sorprendente. Poi la band organizza il festival Beyond The Pale, che chiama a raccolta musicisti indipendenti e di frontiera come Michael Gira, Shellac, Isis, Tarentel e altri, oltre a Von Till e Kelly in vesti soliste e ai Tribes Of Neurot. Nel 2003 viene pubblicato Neurosis & Jarboe, una collaborazione con la ex cantante dei leggendari Swans. Trattenute le solite durezze compulsive, la band crea un suono più astratto e posseduto, sferzato dalla voce celestiale e dai gemiti angoscianti di Jarboe.
Anche The Eye Of Every Storm (2004) allenta i toni e dilata le atmosfere, con canzoni sempre lunghe ma più melodiche e soffuse di malinconia.

Nel 2007 esce Given To The Rising che rispetto al suono liquido e denso degli ultimi lavori, si presenta in parte come un ritorno al passato, riprendendo il discorso interrotto con il granitico "Times Of Grace" (1999 Relapse). Sintetizzando, verrebbe da dire 'meno drone e piu riff taglienti e diretti'. Anche se nel corso dei 70 minuti di durata del disco non mancano i momenti evocativi e d'atmosfera (l'intro di “To The Wind” è spettacolare).

A distanza di cinque anni da Given to the Rising , i Neurosis tornano in studio per rilasciare Honor Found In Decay (2012), decimo album della loro carriera, che recupera le sonorità più introspettive. La decadenza celebrata nel titolo è intesa come astrazione, un crepuscolo lento, irreversibile ma dignitoso. Nonostante una notevole quantità di autocitazioni, questo Honor Found in Decay dei Neurosis è un album che non delude le attese.
